This unique patterned wall was found  at the preserved home of 17th century Haiku poet Kyorai Mukai. Located in a quiet area of Arashiyama, Kyoto, with rice paddies nearby, the home and its garden is well worth a visit for an introduction to the refined traditional aesthetics of house and garden.

The pattern is created by mixing small particles of iron into the clay mixture which is then daubed over a lattice of split bamboo and smoothed to a uniform surface.
